Captain Phillips: It will leave you in a sea of tears
Captain Phillips follows the story of Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) ship, The Maersk Alabama's hijacking. Phillips and his crew were sailing through the Gulf of Aden to deliver cargo to Kenya, but they knew going around the horn of Africa has had previous pirate activity. A few days into the trip they pass Somalia and notice two skiffs are following them. Suspecting they are being followed they scare one off and the other has engine problems, and turns back. The next day the ship with troubles comes back and follows them again. The men do all they can to fight the four pirates in the skiff, but they end up attaching their ladder to get on. Phillips makes all the men hide in the engine room while him and three others stay, and approach the pirates. Phillips and his men find ways to continuously out smart the pirates, since they don't speak much English. The crew that was hiding in the engine room were able to capture Abduwali Muse (Barkhad Abdi), the pirate captain, and threaten the team into taking the money on the boat, then leaving in the lifeboat. They all come to an agreement on the terms, but when Phillips was showing them how to drive the life boat they jetted off before he could get out and took him as a hostage.
I think that Tom Hanks plays such a great role as the Captain because he is able to covey such seriousness through out the whole movie which make it more compelling. I also feel Barkhad Abdi was really great for the part, and did really good for it being one of his first big roles.
I really enjoyed how the conflict between Muse and Nour Najee ( Faysal Amhed), another pirate, was carried throughout the plot. It made some of the slower parts more interesting with the added drama.
Another smaller story that was carried through the movie i enjoyed was how phillips continued to try to save the pirates and tell them everything was okay. Phillips attempted to talk to the youngest pirate, Adan Bilal (Barkhad Abdirahman), and convince him he had a real future if he would have just stopped. He also tried to assured them that they would not get in trouble if they released him. It reveals a message of you should always try to keep a positive outlook on any situation. Another message the movie shows seems to be patriotism. In the movie the captain has faith in his country, and he will be okay. I think both messages are a tad cliché, but they really make you dig for the true meaning.
Over all I would rate the movie a 8 out of ten, because I enjoyed all the actors and how they played their roles, the set they used and how real it looked, and how they used actors that spoke Somalian in the movie. I didn't enjoy the lack of a timeline, and the slow beginning. I think the audience demographic would be around teen years and up. The movie has more mature topics and meanings that could confuse a child.
