One columnist I read on a daily basis is Ask Polly on Tumblr. I enjoy reading her answers to people with questions and I think her advice is really great. She always has interesting things and is a really good writer.

Allowances
Allowances, they are commonly used to award children as well as give them a sense of responsibility. While some parents disagree with giving their children an allowance. I think it is beneficial for the child and is a great reward.

Giving children an allowance can help them learn more about finances. A study done by T. Rowe Price found that is important to allow your kids to make mistakes and mishandle money. Those people who made those mistakes  and learned from them feel a lot more knowledgeable about financing.

Allowances can also open up a reason for you and your child to talk about money. Kids who have frequent conversations about money with their parents — in addition to real-life experience, like getting an allowance and making money mistakes — are far more likely to think they are smart about money (70% vs. 15%). They also feel more empowered and confident than those who do not.

I do see how allowance  could lead children to feeling entitled, but when children receive money it could help them receive basic skills for math at an earlier age.

Children at a young age think that whenever they ask their mom or dad to buy them. Steve Repak, Certified financial planner says that " it is important for kids to start making hard decisions such as where money should go at a young age so they won't always rely on their parents."

Personally I think having an allowance has taught me to be more careful in what I want to purchase. Yes my parents will purchase all my necessary items, but their are things I would want for fun. Some purchases I do regret spending my money on, which now makes me a lot more frugal.

Some parents choose the method of if their child keeps their grades up and does chores them they get their allowance. The price study shows that this method of giving out allowance can help children feel more of a sense of responsibility. It make it seem like the child has a job to complete and they will be rewarded. This is similar to how it works in real life if an adult goes to their job they get paid. Doing this can prepare them for the real world as well as make them feel confident about their money capabilities when they get older.

These day kids are very dependent on their parent or anyone they look up to. Giving them allowances can allow for the child to develop more independence. When using the money the child is forced to think about what they are doing and how do they really want to spend their earnings.

Allowances can really teach a child many lesson so I agree that they are a good thing for a child to have. They prepare for adulthood and can make the child feel proud of their earnings.

  1. Again, you wrote a good piece. The structure is correct and I agree with your opinion. Yet, you said you can see how the other side feels which made me think you opinion was wishy washy until you restated your opinion. I feel like you need to have a straightforward idea on the topic instead of seeming like you agree with the other side at points.

  2. I really liked this story and I agree with your opinion. I liked that you had a strong opinion on the subject, yet you also addressed what the other side might think. Before you post your story, you might want to read it over for grammar mistakes, but I only noticed one or two.
