I had the best dog anyone could ever ask for, his name was Dexter. He was apart of our family long before I was born. He was just the coolest. If he was around today he would have been 18 on September 20, but this summer unfortunately we had to put him down.
When my parents adopted Dexter he was only six weeks old. He was the birthday present for my brother who was at the time five years old.
From stories I have heard I came to know that Dexter was a little monster as a puppy, because he literally chewed on everything. Instead of giving him up though one of our neighbors friends afford to take him away for three months and train him since she was a professional. Three months later we thought we had received a whole new dog.
My parents built our house in 1999 in Circle C. Our house was the second one to be built on our street. Also no one lived behind us it was just basically open field. During the day Dexter would just roam around the whole neighborhood. Sometimes we really never saw him until dinner then again in the morning and off he went.
In 20008-2009 Gorzycki was built right behind our house in the open field. When Gorzycki was finally built and the kids in the neighborhood started to walk their, and Dexter would follow them. When he did the kids told him to go home which he knew to do he would come back home. Then around lunch time. The teachers would call animal control, and my mother and I would have to go retrieve him from the pound. I can't remember how many times we would have to do that until he learned to run away from the dog catchers. He was always to fast for them to catch him and he would come home and hide in the garage or backyard.
In the fall of 2013 my older brother Dylan went off to college. Dexter was getting a lot slower and would not really roam to far anymore, but know he was my responsibility. I had to make sure to feed him, bathe him, and give him his pills.
Dexter was always a fun loving dog. We loved to hang out by the pool in the summer and we loved to just chill all day.In late 2014 Dexter started to lose his sense of hearing. BY march of 2015 Dexter was completely deaf. By that time he really did not go outside the property he would just hang in the garage, the house, and on the front porch.
In mid 2015 Dexter was having a lot of trouble walking and his back legs. by this time he really never even went up our stairs with out having too carry him. During the day he would sleep all day where ever he could.
In mid 2016 Dexter started to develop a tumor on his right back leg. This made it even harder to move so sometimes I had to carry him. Even though it was non cancerous you could still tell he was in pain. After some consulting the vet and others we decided to put Dexter down.On the morning of July 5, 2017 we went to the vet and put him down. It was defiantly one of the hardest things I have done.I am glad that he has been placed out o this pain and hopefully we will meet again.
I like the personal nature of this piece. It is clear Dexter was an important part of your life. In the middle portion I would have liked to know more about how Dexter made your feel. I know you cared and I got some of this at the end, but throughout. How did Dexter impact your life? Give me those "feels" they help tell the story.
